Stress is created by the inner tension between the way things are and the way we want them to be. Most of us spend most of our time telling ourselves about the way we should be. We engage in massive amounts of negative self talk about how we should think, feel, look, act, and so on. In the process we deny ourselves the experience of how we are. We do this not only regarding ourselves, but with virtually all aspects of our life. This creates tremendous amounts of stress. It also prevents us from being able to be with what is. Knowing about this inner mental chatter doesn’t seem to help us stop it.
